UbiSoft to combat piracy by making their games worth buying.

This is a sign that the marketing side of the game industry may be finally maturing. Premiums are an old tactic in other industries, like free toys in cereal, MtG Cards with the MtG Books, air fresheners in a new car.

I've always looked at the stuff like cloth maps as the way to fight piracy. I have a feeling that if I searched the Fourside archives I'd dig up a rant on it. Ranted about it since college.

Of course if the game that comes with the extra stuff is pure crap (as is the case with 100% of the DS games Ubisoft has created thus far) then it doesn't matter what the extra stuff is.

Ubisoft is right though, piracy truly is the reason their sales are low. People download their games, try em out, realize they are total crap, delete them immediately, and don't buy them.

Perhaps, but they are right. There needs to be value in the purchased package that is not available from simply downloading the game. That's the only effective means to combat piracy.

I've always thought these guys were pretty lame, but how does a band come up with an immensely creative first album and then go on to create such generic, over-produced music? it really makes me wonder how much credit these guys can really take from their first release.

Yep, new PATD is garbage. But the same thing happens to many bands, as they get more popular, and more mainstream, and more generic. Just look at Coheed, The Used, AAR...

However, some are worse than others.
