Dark-Fear

Starman Jr.
While reading some warcraft related forums I came acrossed a shocking link that indicates that World of Warcraft has spyware embedded in it. The site that makes these accusations is a legitimate company that designes software used to detect "root Kits" that hackers may write once they have breached a machine. Also one of the programmes from the site appeared on TechTV's "The Screen Savers" For more on this article please goto: Link
I stare out into the light from the darkness, only to wonder what it is I'm missing. Fear not what can be seen in the light of day, but what lurks in the dark and can not.

I feel like deleting this thread right now. Don't give this guy any more attention, goddamn.

The "spyware" he's talking about is a program that runs while WoW is running, gets the names of all the programs you are running, and compares them against a server-based "ban-list" to prevent people from hacking or cheating. If you can't live with that, it's part of the games EULA which has been created so that everyone can enjoy the game freely and without other people disturbing it.

He calls this a violation of privacy? What personal information are they gathering? Would a teacher checking what else is on your desk while you're writing a paper be a violation of privacy? I'd love to stab him in the mouth for this.

Fun: search for "oh noes" in Google.

Your first hit is a WoW site.

I'm sure this "violation of privacy" is fully documented in the EULA which you most likely agree to everytime you log on to play WOW. Too bad you need a law degree to decipher those damn things. if you're that concerned about privacy then I would suggest not playing the game, getting rid of your email address and possibly staying away from the internet all together.

Hell, WoW isn't the only program that does that. I know Steam does it as well while games are active. Hell, there ya go. What do you think Punkbuster does? A lot of Korean MMO's have alittle program that runs in the background while the game is going that actively scans for any cheat programs.

And as someone pointed out, if these people are worried about privacy, maybe they've forgotten about when they supplied blizzard with their name/address/email/credit card information. I doubt very much that blizzard is trying to uniquely track browsing habits and harvest emails for spamming.

My question is: do I really care if a computer program is scanning my emails and applications? I mean, I'm pretty sure a computer program doesn't really care about all the porn on my harddrive or who I'm chatting with at yahoo.com. its not like an actual person is sitting in a room somewhere making observations about the content of my harddrive, right? I'm kind of computer illitirate so I'm not exactly sure what the issue here is. doesnt an invasion of privacy require an actual person to retain your private info at some point in the process? is this taking place here? doesnt blizzard already have your credit card info? sheesh! and Joey by your somewhat violent reaction to this thread i'm assuming your a WOW player?

I think WoW seems like a really good game, but I'll never actually play it (other than the trial that I tested at one point)

It was more against the whisle-blowing community that is quickly becoming a growing trend on the internet. DS and PSP viruses, security flaws, browser wars, system wars, etc. etc. etc. I wish them all to death.

Did you know if you get his with the DS brick virus you can load a cart with the proper firmware on it, and it will re-update and fix itself? Go Nintendo.
